Museo del Vino – whether you are, or are not, a “museum” type, Cafayate´s Museo del Vino wine museum rates a visit. In addition to exploring the history of wine in the Calchaqui Valley, the Museo offers a variety of “hands on” sensory experiences designed to fully appreciate the art and science of wine-making.
La Estancia de Cafayate – located on the edge of Cafayate, La Estancia de Cafayate is a highly successful lifestyle community with residents from Argentina and over 30 other countries. Quebrada de las Conchas – This breathtaking red rock canyon, located along Route 68, features striking geological formations shaped by wind and water erosion. Highlights include El Anfiteatro, a natural amphitheater with impressive acoustics, and Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat), a towering rock crevice resembling an open mouth. The landscape is ideal for photography, hiking, and guided tours that explain the unique geology and history of the region.
Cascadas del Río Colorado – A hidden gem for adventure seekers, these waterfalls are accessible via a moderate-to-difficult trek through rugged terrain and lush vegetation. Located about 6 km from Cafayate, the hike follows the Río Colorado, leading to a series of cascading falls and natural pools perfect for cooling off on a hot day. Local guides, often from indigenous communities, provide insight into the area’s flora, fauna, and legends.
Los Médanos – These striking white sand dunes, located just a few kilometers outside Cafayate, create a surreal contrast with the surrounding green vineyards and red mountains. The fine, soft sand makes them perfect for sandboarding, photography, or simply enjoying the sunset, which casts ever-changing colors over the dunes. It’s an easily accessible yet lesser-known spot, ideal for a peaceful escape into nature.
Ruinas de Quilmes – This ancient archaeological site, about 50 km from Cafayate, preserves the remnants of one of the largest pre-Columbian settlements in Argentina. The Quilmes people fiercely resisted Spanish colonization for over 130 years before being defeated and forcibly relocated. Visitors can explore the reconstructed stone terraces, defensive walls, and living areas, while the museum on-site provides historical context. The elevated location offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding valleys.
Plaza Central de Cafayate – The heart of the town, this charming square is surrounded by colonial-style buildings, restaurants, and artisan shops selling local crafts. Shaded by large trees, it’s a great place to unwind, enjoy an empanada salteña, or sip a glass of local wine at one of the many sidewalk cafés. The Catedral Nuestra Señora del Rosario, a beautiful 19th-century church with unique twin bell towers, adds to the historic charm of the area.
El Anfiteatro – This awe-inspiring natural rock formation, located within Quebrada de las Conchas, is famous for its near-perfect acoustics. The towering, curved rock walls create an echo effect, making it a favorite spot for musicians who often perform impromptu concerts. The reddish hues of the rock change throughout the day, offering a different visual experience depending on the light. It’s easily accessible from the main road and is one of the most photographed sites in the region.
La Yesera – A unique geological site within Quebrada de las Conchas, La Yesera is known for its multicolored rock layers, ranging from white to deep red, which were formed over millions of years. The area is rich in marine fossils, evidence that this region was once covered by an ancient sea. A short hiking trail leads visitors through the striking landscape, offering incredible panoramic views of the surrounding valley and rock formations.
